Symantec Research and Development Headquarters Campus

Symantec Research and Development Headquarters Campus

Client Symantec Corporation
Location Culver City

RELM provided landscape architecture services for the new corporate research and development headquarters of Symantec in Culver City. Built as a citadel on a hill to express a sense of security, which is the basis of Symantec’s work, the campus blends with the surrounding hillside landscape. Plantings of vibrant, water conserving, native plant materials on the surrounding slopes responds to the Baldwin Hills landscape nearby in addition to softening the visual weight of the architecture. A rhythm of Date Palms, Aloes, collections of succulents and art monument lighting elements lead visitors along the entry drive to the central courtyard of the campus at the facility’s entrance. Breaks in the architecture and landscape create visually stunning overlooks for the interior courtyards used by employees and visitors for outdoor dining and, socializing.

The central courtyard is a social gathering area for the entire staff where significant meetings take place to share and celebrate the efforts of the company. The composed nature of the courtyard allows the space to be used for large gatherings, as well as captures a volume of natural light to feed the core interior spaces. An efficient palette of materials including seat walls, hedges, Ginkgos, Oaks, decomposed granite and enhanced concrete paving form a minimalist garden for staff and visitors to encounter as part of the entry experience, and as a view garden from adjacent offices.

Care was taken to blend the street front character of Symantec into the surrounding neighborhood while forming a sense of address and nestling the large corporate headquarters of the leading tech-based company within the delicate natural landscape of one of Los Angeles’ prominent urban canyons.

The project is LEED-NC Gold Certified.
