Space 134 Freeway Cap Park

Space 134 Freeway Cap Park

Client Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG)/City of Glendale
Location Glendale

RELM is conceptually designing the 27-acre “cap park” over the 134 Freeway, through the heart of Downtown Glendale, a green seam that repairs the tear that the freeway made through the city when it was constructed. The large open space within the downtown core addresses the lack of public park space in LA County, where it is estimated that almost 2 out of 3 children do not live within walking distance of a park, playground or open space. In the first phase of the project, RELM team catalogued cap park case studies, generated a variety of alternative visions for the space, identified project benefits and developed a rough order of magnitude cost estimate for the project. For this second phase of work, RELM was again contracted to perform creative community outreach and tactical urbanism, along with refinement of the preferred alternative and additional design studies for the Brand to Central area of the park.
